We have received many emails concerning how you can best manage your hair during this unprecedented time. So we decided to write two blogs. This one is on how to care for color treated hair while not being able to get your hair colored. The second blog is on hair maintenance and care which you can find here.

Unwanted Gray Roots

Taking time off from coloring can be very beneficial for your hair, but having unwanted gray roots can affect our well being. In a time like this, it’s important to stay happy and our hair contributes a great deal to that. So here are a few tips to get you through this time.

Box Color- We have received emails from clients requesting their color formulas so they can try and do their hair at home. We now offer a color survival kit but it only blends gray. Learn more about the kit here. Unfortunately professional color formulas do not crossover into the world of box color. If you need more coverage then our kit allows please send us an email here. We encourage you to withhold from box coloring your hair. These are the reasons why:

  • You may end up with an undesired color result and no professionals will be able to assist until we can reopen. We believe it’s better to wait it out if you can, and if you can’t try a root-concealer spray, they work wonders.

  • You may end up mildly to severely damaging your hair. Take this time as R&R for your hair and do less to make it healthier instead.

  • You may end up with banding. Sure you may get your roots to cover, but the color most likely will deposit deeper and darker around the hairline causing what we call “bands”. Once you are able to see your professional you may end up having to pay for a color correction to remove those bands.

We want you to feel your best and we understand that you may still wish to color your own hair, and that’s absolutely okay. However, Christina one of our color specialists at Bloom shares her favorite gray root solution to get you through this difficult time:

“R+Co’s root concealer spray is a temporary, but water resistant way to cover your unwanted gray roots until you can see your colorist again. In a simple and easy to use spray form you don’t have to worry about it looking unnatural. It’s reflective and adds nice shine which is why at Bloom we prefer it over any powder root concealer. Due to it’s resistance to water/sweat you don’t have to worry about it bleeding onto your skin or pillowcase. When the time comes you just shampoo it out of the hair VOILA.”

How to maintain your color from washing out or turning brassy

You may have heard your colorist speak to you about at home color refreshers. There are two great take home solutions offered from EVO and Davines, two brands we carry, that prevent color from fading, keep away unwanted brassiness, and deposit fresh bright shiny new color to your gorgeous locks.

So how does it work? With EVO Fabuloso your colorist will mix a take home color depositing conditioner customized to your hair color needs. At home after you’ve shampoo’d your hair you will towel dry your locks and apply the conditioner from roots to ends while leaving it to process anywhere from 3-20 mins. Davines offers the option of a pre-mixed color depositing conditioner that is not customizable but depending on your needs can offer some fabulous results .

Although we don’t know how long it will be until we can freshen your color in the salon these are both great options to keep your color looking fresh, shiny and beautiful. If you would like to have a customized EVO conditioner or a pre-mixed Davines conditioner please email us and your colorist will ensure you are shipped a product to suit your color needs.
