She’s the newest addition to our salon, but having only joined Bloom in October, she is already blowing all of our minds with her team player spirit, inspiring can-do attitude, and modern renaissance woman thing that she’s got going on (we’ll get to that later!) Though she’s the newbie to Bloom, please don’t be mistaken – she’s been involved with the hair industry for 10 years now. She particularly has a passion for color, and is exceptionally good with updos and styling. Whenever there is down time in the salon, she’ll pull me aside and put my hair up into an updo that was inspired by something she saw on the streets of New York City, or on some blog she was reading that particular day, and this is no lie: I’ve loved everything she’s done on me.

…And what’s with this modern renaissance woman reference I made earlier? Well, this girl knits baby blankets for friends’ newborn babies, brings in baked goods just about every week, makes some mean enchiladas, has her own hair accessory line, and writes her own blog that encompasses her interests in all of the above. All in all, she is truly the quintessential Bloom girl, and we’re so happy to have her on our team!

Sure she’s one of our “Assistants,” but she’s much more than that! Lastly, I put together two different makeup packages personalized for warm or cool skin tones. We brought in RMS beauty last November and it’s been a huge hit. My favorite curly girl product right now is Sea Salt Primer from Davines. I use it in my hair to help my girls have separation, fullness and bounce without the crispy feeling. However it can be drying so I like to put Aestelance Balm (leave in conditioner) to replenish the loss of moisture the salt takes away from the hair. 

Mune and Leeann are totally obsessed with Davines Volu Mist this season. I know if I need to use it on a client and can’t seem to find it it’s because they’re monopolizing it at their station. It’s great for creating volume in a blowout without drying the hair out.

Leeann picked our fall product special this season and it’s Davines Authentic hair/body washing Nectar and Mouisturizing face/hair/body Balm. It’s as natural as you can get with organic ingredients and are free of SLS, SLES, sulphates, added parabens, artificial coloring, silicon, PEG and ethoxylates.  You’ll find some of my most loved organic farming ingredients such as organic Jojoba oil and Shea butter. Now that same sex marriage is legal in New York, I actually get very excited when someone is coming into the salon preparing for their wedding. When I first started as a hairdresser, I have to admit that I really didn’t want to be a part of a client’s services if it was for a wedding. I would wonder if the couple realized that I didn’t have the same legal right to be married.

Bitter, well sure. In reality, the couple probably did understand that I didn’t have the same rights, but were just caught up in the happiness and chaos that goes along with getting married.

My husband and I have been together for 12 years and we have been politicly active for years advocating for our own rights. We lobbied in Washington State to get Domestic Partnership benefits passed while we were living in Seattle. Of course, we sent off for our domestic partnership license as soon as it became law.  We even got a handy I.D. card to carry in our wallets! This never quite seemed the same as being married, and in fact it is a few thousand rights short of marriage. When same sex marriages became legal in California, prior to Prop 8, we flew to San Francisco and made it legal! Sure it meant nothing back in WA, but we were anticipating a move back to the east coast to either NYC or DC. DC we knew was in the process of offering marriage equality, and NY State would at least recognize our marriage, though not when it came to filing our taxes.

We moved to NYC about three years ago and were very disappointed when marriage was up and failed to pass in front of the NY Senate two years ago. We were okay, as our license was still valid, but none of our friends could share in our marital bliss. I could be on my husband’s insurance, have a right to hospital visits, etc. All of that still didn’t seem enough though.

This past June, I sat in anticipation in front of the TV, on the night of the marriage vote as if I was waiting for my numbers to be called for Mega Millions.In moments, we could all be celebrating or be left feeling an emptiness and and want to either hit the bottle or eat a tub of ice cream. After 33 “yes” votes in the NY State Senate, I sat crying. We had won in NY! Things could indeed change in this country!

So yeah, it’s not on Federal marriage equality, YET. But we’re New Yorkers. We do everything big. As long as we are visible and vocal one day, hopefully soon, salons in every state will be scheduling two brides for up-dos or two grooms for a trim in preparation for their big day! So now I no longer turn my nose up at the wedding parties because I too can share in their happiness!

It may seem small but it lasts me about 3 months. I recommend it for all types of skin and it works especially well with acne prone. With a mixture of jojoba, coconut and beeswax it leaves your skin smooth and soft but not greasy. Simply dab a little on your face and rub it in. A little bit goes a very long way and you’ll find that you just can’t live without it!

The Living luminizer is the perfect pick-me-up product. Even if all I do is dab this on my cheeks before I go out I instantly feel beautiful. I’ve looked long and hard for the perfect highlighter, but they all seem to be glittery. The luminizer looks like a little bit of light is always shinning off your cheeks. It’s also looks great dabbed in front of each eye to help hide dark circles. It instantly brightens the eyes.

He’s our new stylist of the month!

Like the first signs of Autumn, Justin has blown us all away with his selfless acts of teamwork. He embodies the spirit of Bloom. We are a family dedicated to you and making you feel fabulous!

Each stylist here at Bloom has their own strengths and it is our goal to put you with the stylist that is best for you. Recently, Justin has referred some of his clients to another stylist because he felt they would be a better match, even if it meant a little less money in the bank.

That’s teamwork. If we were a sports team we’d all be patting him on the butt!

Aside from being our MVP this month, Justin has always brought a little something special to work – and I’m not talking about his banana bunker! If you are one of his clients, I’m sure you know he is quite the storyteller and often our in-salon entertainment. Whether it be a detailed account of Mr. Shmitz or Franklin’s – those are his cats -  latest tickle pickle adventures, some outlandish thing his grandmother said or the time he went on a date with a mortician, Justin always has us laughing.

About a year ago, he decided to give a shot at putting his natural talents and obvious good looks to work and started taking acting and improv classes. We’ll see his name in lights one day I’m sure!

A crescent moon. They are my latest obsession. I just bought earrings on Etsy.

What do you love about Fall?

The crisp air and the sunsets. It reminds me of the excitement of the first day of school. Even though I really didn’t like school. (I bet he just liked the back to school shopping.)

What dish are you most looking forward to for Thanksgiving?

Mom’s sweet potato casserole. It’s like dessert but you can eat it for breakfast, lunch and dinner!

What will be the title of your off-broadway one man show?

“Totally Inappropriate” (Just so you know he didn’t skip a beat with this answer and I think it’s totally appropriate.)

What’s your favorite thing about doing hair?

Making people feel better about themselves.

Which celebrity are you dying to give a hair makeover to?

Christina Aguilera. Take out the extensions and go back to glamorous and chic!
